Getting to Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is located 15 kilometers off the mainland of South Australia and is easily accessible by sea or air.

Qantas operates short 30 minute flights from Adelaide Airport landing at Kingscote Airport, 13 kilometers from Kingscote. As Kangaroo Island does not have a public transport system visitors need to hire a car or arrange a tour with one of the many operators on the island.

Sealink operates a ferry service from Cape Jervis on the mainland to Penneshaw. While you can drive yourself, coach connections are available from Adelaide, Cape Jervis, Penneshaw, American River and Kingscote. The ferry trip is a comfortable 40 minutes.

KI Connect operates a passenger ferry service from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, with hire cars available from Penneshaw. Transfers are also available.

Most tourist attractions on Kangaroo Island are on or within a few kilometres of the sealed roads. A 4WD is not necessary, with care you can enjoy all the island has to offer in a 2WD. If you choose to hire a vehicle it is important to check the restrictions as some mainland hire companies will not insure vehicles on the island. There are three hire companies on the island, Budget, Hertz and KI Connect. We recommend you book well in advance if you require a hire car.
